Choosing An Online Niche
A lot of people new to the online business world make the mistake of choosing a product or service that is considered “hot” at the moment without thinking about the competition level or whether that particular field is saturated or not. This can lead to them ending up spending a fortune on startup costs and advertising and nothing to show for it in the end.
If you are thinking about starting an online business it’s essential to find your own niche. This is basically a product or service that serves a highly targeted audience with very specific needs. This is an important step because with all of the different businesses establishing a presence online it is important to choose something that caters to an under-served audience with a specific need or demand. If you find the proper niche you will stand a much better chance of succeeding with your online business venture.
Here are a few tips on choosing a niche that will help to improve your chances of success.
Find Your Passion
Sit down and make a list of your passions and your knowledge of each of them. This should include your interests, hobbies, professional skills, and any other topics that you would enjoy dealing with on a daily basis. At first, you may find this a challenge if you have been caught up in the 9 to 5 grind and forgotten your true passions. Be patient and enlist the help of some friends if you think it would help.
It is important that you are passionate about what you do because this will show when you build a client base. If you are enthusiastic about what you do this will reflect in your work and your clients are more likely to return to do business with you time and again. Also, if you truly enjoy what you do it will almost never feel like work.
Research Your Market
Once you have decided on a niche the next step is to start researching the industry online. You can begin to find your audience and where your position will be in your market by participating in forums related to your topic, visiting social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, and any other sites where you can find people discussing this topic.
When you visit these various sites, listen and take notes on what people are discussing. This will help you to discover exactly what they are looking for when it comes to your niche. Listening to the needs of your audience will help you to determine the exact placement for your online business.
For example, if your area of interest is landscaping, it’s important to find specifically what people are looking for in regard to landscaping – since this is an example of a very broad topic with a lot of competition. What about landscaping? What are people specifically looking for? Are they looking for landscaping professionals? Are they looking for landscaping tools? Perhaps they are looking for tips on how to do their own landscaping.
The key here is to drill down into the term “landscaping” and find a specific niche related to this topic that serves a highly targeted audience with very defined needs.
Choosing Your Keywords
Once you find your target audience and know exactly what they are looking for, it’s time to figure out exactly which terms they are using to search for the information online. These terms are known as keywords, and choosing the proper ones is absolutely essential if you want to show up near the top of the results page when they are used. It’s important to find the terms that are used often and have relatively low competition. There are a lot of free tools out there to assist in this task. We prefer the one from Google, which can be found here.
Just like you had to drill down to find a niche, you must find keywords that relate to the niche. Let’s go back to the landscaping example. If you simply choose the phrase “landscaping” you may get a lot of completely untargeted visitors to your site. For example, if you are selling landscaping plans and they are looking for landscaping tools they will quickly leave your site. If you choose the keywords “landscaping plans for small backyards” you know exactly what the people are searching for and it makes it easy to deliver the solution when they land on your page.
Take the time to choose your niche and get to know your market and exactly what they are looking for. The time you invest will help you to build a solid foundation for building a business that will last for the long term.
