Anyone that has shopped for jewelry can attest to the fact that platinum is considered better than gold.  The higher price, and the way the salespeople seemingly steer us towards it, can be used as further evidence.  However, most people would not be able to tell the difference between a platinum and a white gold ring.  To the wearer, however, this probably doesn’t matter.  They might ‘feel’ better about wearing the higher priced piece of jewelry, even though most don’t even know.  It’s all about perception.

Growing up, I was always told to live by the ‘Golden Rule’.  You know the one –  ’treat others as you’d like to be treated. And I’d like to think I’ve done so for the most part.  I’ve always tried to consider how I’d feel if my actions or words were directed towards me to make sure I did or said the right thing.

However, lately I’ve been hearing about the ‘Platinum Rule’.  This is a bit different – ‘treat others as THEY’D like to be treated’.  And, if you think about it, it really does make more sense.  Each of us is different and might want to be treated as such.  How I like to be treated might be completely different to how someone else wants to be treated.  This is even more important in business.  Perhaps it’s no longer enough to give our customers the ‘golden treatment’.  Maybe it’s time to step it up to the ‘platinum treatment’.  Learn more about them and try to treat them how THEY’D like to be treated instead of how we think WE’D like to be treated.

The difference, unlike jewelry, will likely be quite apparent.
