Website Management – Critical Aspect of Business

For many companies, a website has become a mission-critical component of the business – directly supporting marketing, sales, distribution, procurement and customer relationships management.

It’s a fact – the content on websites is getting older every day. The reality is, if you want your website to work, it must be fresh and it must be cared for constantly. Most business owners don’t have the time to do it themselves and don’t want to field the cost of keeping an IT person on staff. Either way, most websites don’t receive the attention and maintenance they need.

Website management is the practice of website administration – the kind of day to day tweaks and tasks to ensure your website is continually performing at its peak. Aside from being on constant alert for any technical mishaps that might take your site down, there are a number of things you should take care as part of your website management strategy.

Firstly, it’s a good idea to make sure you have up-to-date content. New content in the form of new products and services, monthly special offerings, useful tips and noteworthy news articles will give visitors a reason to return. That doesn’t mean you need to be constantly adding more and more content to your website (although it does help as far as search engines are concerned), but rather that the content you do have on your website is relevant and current.

This can also allow you to test and tweak elements of your content, such as headings, different call to actions and even different landing pages for different marketing techniques, allowing you to refine your website to make sure it really does convert at the highest percentage possible.

It’s also important to ensure you stay on top of the latest trends in SEO and update your website accordingly. Certain on-page factors may need to be tweaked or altered depending on the movement of the competition within the search engines and changes to the search engine algorithms. By having an effective website management strategy in place, you can be sure you’re not lagging behind in the search engines or in the eyes of your prospects.

For website management to be done right, it does take time. Monitoring your site, updating the content, creating backups, and everything else involved can be a lot of work, especially when you consider that the rules for keeping the site fresh in the eyes of the search engines are constantly changing. Fortunately, there are companies out there that offer this type of service for a mere fraction of what it would cost to keep a full-time IT person on staff.
