Word of Mouth Advertising is Still a Useful Marketing Tool

With all of the technology and media available these days, it’s almost surprising that the most effective marketing method is still word-of-mouth. Are you incorporating this method into your marketing strategy?

After identifying the audience for a particular promotion, be sure to target the people or businesses that would most likely “spread the word.” Then, think about what gets these people talking. What’s different about your offer that’s worth mentioning in everyday conversation and what are you offering that your target can’t get anywhere else? Successful word-of-mouth advertising includes offers that are exclusive, fun, and surprising.

Monitor the communication – this is where technology and multi-media come into play. Maybe you’re sending postcards for a promotion. Instead of simply advertising the special, direct people to your website where they will not only find details, but also an ongoing blog. Be sure to set up your blog so that people can share their experiences with others.

On the blog, you can start a discussion about the kinds of services they use from you or how you have helped them. Incorporate a giveaway for those who participate in the blog to help get it started. You’ll get the “word-of mouth” effect, strengthen your offer, and increase the success of your campaign.

These days, word-of-mouth can really increase your business rapidly as it moves from people talking face-to-face to cell phones and to the Internet. Use this to your advantage with a presence on Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter as well as your company website.
